About Shaded Lawns

Shade presents one of the biggest challenges to creating the lush, thriving lawn you desire. Just as all plants do, grass requires air, light and proper nutrients to thrive. Shady areas of your lawn can prevent grasses from getting these essentials, impacting not only the appearance of your lawn but also its overall health.

In shady areas, grasses will stretch to reach sunlight if they are not receiving enough light causing them to grow thin and weak. Since our lawn care programs are customizable, we are able to make recommendations specifically for shaded areas.  Through a soil test, we make necessary adjustments to encourage growth by having optimal pH and nutrient levels. We then will use a specialized seed that is specifically designed for shady areas and provide recommendations on properly caring for your lawn.

There are some simple steps you can take to encourage grass growth in these shady areas:

  • If possible, you can trim back trees and shrubs to allow more sunlight to reach your lawn
  • Choose a grass seed that will thrive in the shade
  • Ensure nutrient levels are ideal through a soil test
  • Follow proper water and mowing practices

Consider mulching around trees instead of growing grass...ideally creating a six-inch buffer. Since tree roots and trunks are often damaged by mowers, mulch will not only protect them but create less competition from the tree roots for water and nutrients.

You may have given up on growing grass in shady areas of your lawn, but with the right seed and proper care, it is not impossible. If you have any questions, please give us a call at [phone-number] or contact us today.
